Torah Study: Join Rabbi Heidi Hoover for an exciting and highly informed Torah study session in the Banquet Hall Saturday at 10:00 AM before services (also offered some Friday evenings prior to Erev Shabbat services). Check the calendar for exact dates and times.
No preparation is necessary, and don't be shy about coming if you feel you don't know much about the Bible. This is the time to learn! Discussion will be informal and relaxed. Feel free to bring breakfast or coffee along if you wish. Come one, come all! If you're at the temple anyway beause you have a child in religious school, why not come and learn a little Torah? If you're not already there, why not come an hour earlier. and learn some Torah?
In addition to ongoing offerings at Temple Beth Emeth — Torah study on Friday evenings or Saturday morning (check Temple calendar), Israeli dancing on Mondays at 7:30 pm ($10 per person), and Hebrew classes (contact the Temple office for details - 718-282-1596) — we have a few special/limited courses.
In May and June of 2017, Rabbi Hoover will teach a five-session course called "Torah Fan Fiction--Midrash."
Aggadic midrash, sometimes called legend, is a rabbinic method of telling stories to fill in gaps in the terse Biblical text. Our midrash class will look at famous and obscure midrashim, discussing what the rabbis were teaching and how their ideas can enhance our understanding of biblical text.
7:00 to 8:30 pm on the following Thursdays:
May 4, 11, and 25, June 8 and 22. $100 per person.
Call Alice at the Temple office to register--718-282-1596.
Rabbi Hoover also leads "Meditation Monday," from 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm. She will offer a Jewish Kavvanah (intention), and we will sit together focusing on our breath for 20 minutes, noticing when the mind wanders and gently bringing the focus back to our breath. A great way to recover from Monday and start the rest of the week. Check the Temple Calendar to confirm dates.
