Sisterhood Brunch/Lecture - June 1st at 9:30 am

posted May 9, 2019, 6:17 AM by Alice Hyatt

The Sisterhood of B’ShERT proudly welcomes fellow Brooklynite Fran Hawthorne.  Fran has spent more than three decades writing award-winning nonfiction, including eight books, mainly about consumer activism and business social responsibility. But her first love has always been fiction, and now her debut novel, The Heirs, has been published (Stephen F. Austin State University Press).

In her nonfiction career, her book Ethical Chic: The Inside Story of the Companies We Think We Love (Beacon Press) was named one of the best books of 2012 by Library Journal. In addition, she's been an editor and writer (staff and freelance) at BusinessWeek, Fortune, The New York Times, Newsday, and other newspapers and magazines. Fran also reviews fiction for The New York Journal of Books.

Fran will talk about how she switched from nonfiction to fiction, why she wrote this particular novel, and the importance today of its themes of the Holocaust and intergenerational ethnic hatreds. Of course she'll also discuss the book itself and read a couple of short excerpts --- and she'll be happy to answer questions.
