Combating the Trade in Stolen Cultural Property:  A Report from the Trenches
The Sisterhood of Temple Beth Emeth welcomes congregant and Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Karin Orenstein. Karin joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2008 and is currently an asset forfeiture AUSA with a focus on pursuing, forfeiting and returning stolen art and artifacts. Karin will talk about the use of satellite photography to track looting in antiquity-rich conflict zones, the laws that protect foreign cultural property, and some basic due diligence you can do to avoid buying stolen property and encouraging further looting. Drawing on stories from her cases, Karin will trace the journeys some art and artifacts have taken from foreign lands, how they were concealed along the way, and what happened when they were discovered in the U.S.
